Yari: Stop calling on Trump, only Nigerians can fix Nigeria

Former Zamfara State Governor and Senator representing Zamfara West, Abdulaziz Yari, has criticised those urging U.S. President Donald Trump to intervene in Nigeria’s affairs, insisting that only Nigerians can resolve the nation’s challenges.

Speaking on Wednesday in Abuja at the official flag-off of the One Nigeria Project organised by the National Association of Former Local Government Council Chairmen (NALGON), Yari said no foreign power can solve Nigeria’s problems, stressing that the responsibility lies squarely with Nigerians, particularly the political elite.

He accused the elite class, which he estimated at fewer than two million people, of fueling the divisions in the country, adding that insecurity and other national challenges would be resolved if elites decide to work together in the nation’s interest.

Yari, who said he has monitored local government administration since 1986, reiterated the need to strengthen the tier of government closest to the grassroots through adequate funding.

“America calls itself God’s own country, but Nigeria is even more of God’s own country. If Nigerians can put the country first like Americans do, we will overcome our challenges. So, elites, what exactly is the problem? Stop calling on Trump, he has no business in Nigeria. Only Nigerians can fix Nigeria,” he said.

He also emphasised his loyalty to Nigeria, noting that unlike many critics who hold dual citizenship, he carries only the Nigerian passport.

“Those with multiple passports forget the weight of their words because they have alternatives. We do not. Our roots are here,” he said.

Former Attorney-General of the Federation, Michael Aondoakaa, also spoke at the event, calling for stronger support for local government administrators who are closest to the people and better positioned to tackle insecurity.

Similarly, former Benue State Governor , Samuel Ortom, urged Nigerians to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration and shun sentiments, while also advocating for a renewed synergy between past and current local government officials. (Daily Trust)
