Four pupils killed, several injured as truck plunges into river in Kogi State




Four Egbolo pupils in Kogi State died when a truck ferrying them to school crashed into a river, leaving several others injured.

Four pupils of Egbolo community in Igalamela-Odolu local government area of Kogi state on Monday lost their lives when a truck conveying them to their school at the nearby Ofuloko community was involved in a self accident.

The youth leader of the community Usman Idrisu while speaking on the unfortunate incident said the community despite its population does not have a primary school.

He lamented that their children have to trek a long distance to Ofuloko community to enable them get access to basic education.

Idrisu who described the incident as black Monday in Egbolo community, said the accident occurred around 8am when a truck carrying building materials ferried some of the pupils to drop them at Ofuloko primary school, but was involved in an accident leading to the death of four children, with many sustaining various degree of injuries.

He appealed to the state governor Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo to consider the population of the community and establish a primary school in the community.

“The truck ould not climb the hill after it crossed the bridge and rolled backward before plunging into the river.

“We are seriously grieved in Egbolo community for the death of four of our children who died in the cause of seeking education.

“As it is now, many of them that sustained injuries have been rushed to a hospital in Idah town. This incident could have been averted if only there is a primary school in our community.

“That is why we are earnestly appealing to Kogi state government to come to our aid by giving us a primary school so that our children will not be facing long distance before they can acquire primary school education.” (ARISE NEWS)
