ADC expels lone federal lawmaker, Abejide

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has ratified the decision of the Kogi State Executive Committee to expel Hon Leke Abejide from the party over alleged acts of indiscipline.

This was disclosed on Thursday by the National Publicity Secretary of the party, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi.

Abejide, the only serving federal lawmaker elected on the ADC platform, has openly rejected the coalition-led takeover of the party and has been critical of the process.

His stance comes despite his expressed commitment to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election while retaining his membership of the ADC—drawing parallels with the role played by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike within the PDP.

In August, the Kogi State Working Committee (SWC) of the ADC suspended Abejide and four other members—Dr Idris Omede, Hon Johnson Tayo, Lukman Usman Adedayo and Olabode Kayode—over alleged anti-party activities and insubordination.

The decision was announced by the State Secretary, John Adaji, while addressing journalists in Lokoja.

However, the suspension sparked a counteraction from a faction loyal to Abejide, which claimed that the state party chairman, Kingsley Ogga, had been expelled since 2022 beginning from his ward and subsequently at the local government level—a decision which it said had already been ratified by the State Executive Committee.

However, at the end of its meeting held on Thursday at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja, the ADC NWC upheld the state committee’s action against Abejide.

The party emphasised that it would not tolerate any form of indiscipline as it works to consolidate its structure around core values of discipline, character and integrity.

Additionally, the NWC directed the state leadership to ensure that all vacant positions within the ward, local government and state executive committees are filled in line with the approved transition guidelines issued earlier. It added that the timeline for the forthcoming congresses would be announced soon. (Daily Trust)
