Hoteliers send SOS to Makinde over multiple taxation, extortion

The Hoteliers Association of Oyo State has called on the government to address the issue of multiple taxation and extortion by non-government actors, which is crippling the hospitality industry in the state.

In a press conference held at the Davis Hotel, Bodija, in Ibadan during the week, the president of the association, Mr. Ayodele Ogundele, lamented the numerous taxes imposed on hotels, including value-added tax, sales tax, and property tax, among others.

He noted that these taxes are making it difficult for hotels to operate and are driving up costs for customers.

“We are not running away from paying taxes, but some of these taxes are arbitrary and extortionate,” Ogundele said. “We are calling on the government to look into this issue and provide relief to hotels in Oyo State.”

Ogundele also expressed concern about the activities of non-government actors, including consultants and associations, who are taking advantage of the system to extort money from hotels.

He cited instances where hotels have been locked up and chains placed on their gates for non-payment of taxes.

The association is seeking the government’s intervention to provide a harmonised bill that outlines the taxes payable by hotels and to put an end to the activities of non-government actors who are exploiting hotels.

“We want to pay taxes, but we want to be treated fairly and transparently,” Ogundele said. “We are calling on the government to come to our rescue and provide a conducive environment for hotels to operate.”

The association also commended the Oyo State Government for its efforts to improve the business environment in the state and urged the government to continue to support the hospitality industry.

The press conference was attended by the association members from across different zones in Oyo State. (Tribune)
