The Asagba of Asaba, Prof. Epiphany Azinge (SAN) Epiphany Azinge, has ordered the closure of all the markets in the capital town, on Thursday (tomorrow), in honour of the late Odogwu of Asaba, Obi Nwanze Oduah.
The royal father issued the order, on Wednesday, at a news briefing in his palace to formally announce the
Commencement of the funeral rites in honour of the deceased.
According to the Asagba, the community will also observe a week-long mourning period, “during which social and communal activities are expected to be kept low, with the exception of essential or emergency engagements”.
Oduah, who was the highest-ranking palace chief in Asaba, died on Nov. 13 and would be buried on Nov. 20.
The Asagba described his death as “a personal and collective tragedy”.
He said that the deceased was not only the “second-in-command” in the traditional hierarchy but also his cousin.
The Asagba also described Oduah as “a firm defender of the kingdom and an emblem of courage”.
He said that the deceased “stood in the forefront of Asaba’s security efforts,” often taking personal risks to ensure the safety of the community.
The late Odogwu was also credited with championing vigorous anti-drug war in Asaba, confronting traffickers and addicts alike in his mission to sanitise the community.
Azinge further described him as “fearless” and “a pillar to the throne”.
He said that Asaba had lost one of its most dedicated sons and that the void left by his death would be felt for many years to come.
The asagba extended condolences from the palace to the bereaved family, particularly his wife, children, and the Umuonaje quarters, including Umuagulu and the Mogbo family.
He said that the traditional processes had been completed “for the deceased to be lowered to rest on Thursday, prompting the citywide closure of markets in his honour”.
The traditional ruler urged all sons and daughters of Asaba to use the mourning period “for reflection, unity, and respect for the departed leader who, according to him, “gave his life for the protection and progress of Asaba”. (NAN)
