Nigerians have continued to react to the report of bandits’ attack on Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), Oke-Isegun, in Eruku, Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State, saying “nowhere is safe again in this country.”
The incident, captured in a livestream, happened during a programme ahead of the church’s night vigil. Witnesses said the attackers entered the church while the service was ongoing and opened fire before targeting worshippers.
An anonymous eyewitness said, “The gunmen came into the church while people were gathered. They started shooting and three people died immediately. They later rounded up some worshippers, including the pastor, and marched them into the bush.”
The video of the attack has drawn wide criticism, with many Nigerians expressing fear over the rising insecurity and the government’s alleged inability to protect citizens.
An X user, identified as @Stellables wrote, ”No where is safe again in this country.”
Another Nigerian, tweeting at @youngsahito, said, “This is a clear evidence of bandits targeting christains. Tinubu is a failure in terms of insecurity in this country. I pray those that were kidnapped would be safely returned alive.”
Reacting to the incident, @UnkleAyo criticised the Nigerian government, accusing it of failing to protect the citizens, “This happened today, in a sovereign country. “Livestream from a church in Kwara State captures terrorists attacking during a church service. “The Nigerian Government has lost the capacity to save the Nigerian people. “This video will chill your spine.”
“Christians in Nigeria are no longer safe. All Christian faithful in Nigeria should avoid going to church for now. Churches are no longer a safe place for worship,” @sleekgodfrey1 wrote on X.
@Ugo_KelechiPhD wondered how hundreds of people would have died in many churches without a livestreaming opportunity. “Now imagine the hundreds of thousands of killings that did not have Church livestream.” @StelxyG wrote, “Peace is actually underrated, I just saw the Livestream video of people running for their lives in a CAC church in Kwara, I’m traumatized, I weep for this country, imagine that old woman who can barely walk also running for her life, Nigerian government shame on you, big shame.”
For @lollypeezle, it’s impossible to deny there is no Christian genocide in Nigeria. “You can’t say there’s no Christian Genocide in Nigeria because how do you explain a church in Eruku getting attacked during livestream? “Worshippers were praying and these terrorists came in blazing gun and wielding cutlasses. Where’s our sovereignty now?” the user queried.
Meanwhile, Tribune Online earlier reported that Nollywood celebrities have also reacted to the incident, calling on the President to act.
Funke Akindele reacted on X, saying, “Woke up to see a livestream video of people being attacked inside a church in Kwara. ?? This is sad and disturbing. I wept seeing that old woman who couldn’t walk well running for safety.”
Another Nigerian influencer, Enioluwa Adeoluwa , tweeted, “That livestream put it into reality for so many of us. The reality that it can happen to anyone. I am not special. You’re not special. “Very heartbreaking to watch.?”
Nollywood actor Femi Adebayo also lent his voice, describing the viral livestream of the incident as a signal of the current situation of the country. He said, “Seeing a livestream of people being attacked inside a church in Kwara. “That elderly woman struggling to find safety… it tells you everything about where we are right now as a nation. “These are human lives. Families, Futures. Dreams Real people. “We need to step up our security measures and strategies. “This can’t continue anywhere within our country. “Nigeria must be better than this.” (TRIBUNE)
