Enyimba International of Aba are the 2013 Nigerian Federation Cup champions. Minutes ago the Peoples Elephants reproduced the championship stuff for which they are known, coming back twice to equalise against a resilient Warri Wolves before coasting to victory via penalty kicks.

With scores at 2-2 after full time, the match officials decided to call for penalty kicks rather than go for extra time. While Enyimba scored all their five kicks, goalkeeper Femi Thomas spoiled the fun for Super Eagles defender Azubuike Egwueke by stopping his kick to leave scores at 7-6 and send Enyimba supporters led by Abia State Governor Theodore Orji into dancing at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos.

Enyimba and Warri Wolves are archrivals, both teams having cancelled themselves out in the league this season.

Enyimba, who have won the competition twice in the past, are one of Nigeria’s most successful clubs of all time, and the only Nigerian side to have won the African Champions League – doing so back to back. They are now richer with a Federation Cup winners purse of 2 million naira, while Warri Wolves, of Delta State, who are yet to win the cup, pocket 1 million naira as runners-up.

With Enyimba’s victory, the cup is returning to the South-East, as Heartland of Owerri, Imo State, won it last year.
