The Lagos State Government on Friday arrested 15 street beggars during enforcement operations at Ikosi Ketu and Mile 12.

According to the State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, the operation is part of the government’s continuous efforts to uphold public order and preserve public spaces from abuse.

“Fifteen street beggars were apprehended this morning during our enforcement operations at Ikosi Ketu and Mile 12.

“This is part of our ongoing effort to maintain order, ensure safety, and protect public spaces from misuse,” Wahab said via his X handle.

He added that the ministry will continue to enforce the law while collaborating with social welfare agencies to provide rehabilitation where necessary.

“Lagos must remain safe, clean, and orderly for all who live and work here. Our resolve remains firm,” he stated.

The operation follows a recent enforcement initiative aimed at protecting public spaces and curbing the menace of street begging.

In a similar operation on Thursday, eight suspected phone snatchers were arrested on the Mile 2 pedestrian bridge and subsequently sentenced to six months’ imprisonment.

According to Wahab, the suspects were apprehended during a morning raid by operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps. (The PUNCH)
