Singer Akon arrested in Georgia, released on bail

Grammy-nominated artiste, Aliaune Damala Badara Akom Thiam, popularly known as Akon, was arrested last week in suburban Atlanta, United States of America, after failing to appear in court for a ticket related to driving with a suspended license.

Police in Chamblee, Georgia, arrested the singer on Friday after receiving a wanted person alert for a white Tesla Cybertruck registered to him.

He was taken to the DeKalb County jail and later handed over to Roswell police, who booked him into another facility. Akon posted bail and was released later that day.

According to a Roswell police report, the warrant stemmed from a September 10 incident when officers found Akon’s disabled Cybertruck on a busy street. A license check revealed the singer had no valid auto insurance and a suspended driver’s license for failing to appear in court earlier in 2023. The vehicle was impounded, and Akon was cited for driving without a valid license.

Chamblee police said they found the singer at a local business called Tint World after a traffic camera flagged his vehicle. Officers confirmed his identity and informed him of the warrant. He reportedly remained calm and acknowledged being aware of it.

Police said no weapons or contraband were found during the search. According to jail records, Akon was booked around 12:30 p.m. and released around 6:30 p.m. the same day.

According to ABC News, Akon’s representatives have not yet responded to requests for comment. The 52-year-old artist is currently on tour in India, where he performed in Delhi two days after his arrest. (TRIBUNE)
