Lagos seals site, issues ultimatum over unapproved buildings

The Lagos State Building Control Agency has sealed a construction site and issued a 72-hour ultimatum to another property within the Lekki–Ikoyi corridor for unauthorised development.

In a statement shared on X, LASBCA said its officials on Thursday sealed a building under construction at Femi Okunnu Road, Alexander Avenue, after the developers failed to secure the required permits.

The agency stressed that adherence to building regulations is crucial to prevent the proliferation of unauthorised structures and to ensure safety and orderly development across Lagos.

Also, LASBCA issued a 72-hour ultimatum to QMB Mart to remove all illegal structures on Coastal Road and under the powerline.

Special Adviser to the Governor on E-GIS and Urban Development, Dr Olajide Abiodun, said the space was originally allocated strictly as a parking lot.

“The occupants allegedly converted it into a commercial hub, erecting a laundromat, clubhouse, and eatery without proper approvals,” Abiodun said.

He added, “Development in Lagos must follow due process. Any structure built without approval or any change of use of Government-Allocated spaces without authorisation is illegal. We are committed to ensuring that the master plan of the state is respected.”

General Manager of LASBCA, Gbaye Florence, reiterated the agency’s commitment to regular monitoring of all development zones.

“Our job is to ensure that buildings across Lagos are safe and comply with global standards. Anyone who puts up structures without approval will be tracked, marked, and appropriate enforcement actions taken,” she said.

LASBCA affirmed that its enforcement exercise will continue across the state to eliminate illegal structures and promote a safer, well-planned Lagos.

PUNCH Online on November 6 reported that LASBCA announced plans to intensify enforcement of building standards across all 57 local government areas and Local Council Development Areas in the state.

Abiodun said the initiative underscores the government’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property by ensuring that all construction activities comply with approved building standards.

“We are going to carry out monitoring and enforcement in all council areas. Our goal is for officers to reach every construction site across Lagos. The only way to build capacity is to engage members of the public,” Abiodun said. (PUNCH)
