North-East youths under the aegis of North-East Youth Peace and Development Initiative have indicated readiness to take over the management of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps across the North-East and appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to approve it.
Alhaji Kyari Idris Abubakar, National President of the group, who disclosed the intention of the youths to Independent further explained that the group felt disappointed in the report of how officials and workers of the camps were short-changing those they are supposed to carter for.
He said, “We consider it as very embarrassing that despite the effort of both federal and state governments to adequately take care of the displaced persons, some unscrupulous persons are diverting food meant for displaced persons in camps.”
He described as a shame, protest by some IDPs in Maiduguri some weeks ago over poor feeding and neglect.
Alhaji Abubakar further explained that the group’s request was purely on humanitarian ground and had nothing to do with serving personal interest because they would not want to be paid for the job.
He lamented the complaint by Senator Ali Ndume, Senate leader, when he visited some IDPs camps that some bags of food items meant for the displaced persons disappeared and could not be traced.
“I know that the welfare of IDP members have been the top priority of President Buhari since he took over power last year, but the activities of some corrupt workers in the camp have made the effort useless.
“We gathered from reliable source that some of these diverted bags of food items were taken to neighbouring countries like Niger, Chad and sold to traders in those countries.”
The group promised to end the complaint of diversion of food items if given the opportunity to manage IDPs camps in the North-East. (Independent)
