Nigeria will not meet archrivals Ivory Coast or Ghana in the final round of the African qualifiers for the Brazil 2014 World Cup, it has been confirmed. Rather, Nigeria’s Super Eagles will meet any of the following: Cameroon, Burkina Faso, Egypt, Ethiopia or Senegal.
This follows the seeding, yesterday, for the draws scheduled to be made on Monday, September 16, by world soccer governing body FIFA, which saw Nigeria in Pot A.
Nigeria, the reigning African champions, are ranked the fourth best team in Africa in the latest FIFA Rankings released yesterday. They have recorded 707 points and dropped to 36th place on the global ranking.
Ivory Coast remain the top African team as they are the 18th best team in the world, while Ghana are second as they are rated 24th in the world. Mali are fifth best African team as they are 38th, even though they did not qualify for the final playoffs.
Following the disqualification of 44th ranked Cape Verde for using an ineligible player against Tunisia in their final qualifier, Tunisia, who are 46th, are thus the fifth and last top seed.
