‘Bandits attacking us’, Kano community raises alarm

Chairman of Faruruwa Security Committee, Yahaya Umar

Residents of Shanono Local Government Area of Kano State have raised the alarm over the attacks on the community and surrounding villages.

Addressing journalists in Kano, on Thursday, Yahaya Umar Bagobiri, Chairman of the Faruruwa Security Committee, said the community had been under attacks by bandits who crossed into Kano from neighbouring Katsina State in 2022.

He appealed to federal and state governments to urgently intervene.

He said, “We have been facing serious security challenges for the past three years. Bandits have been coming from Katsina into Faruruwa and its surrounding areas to kill, kidnap, and steal our animals.”

According to him, the attacks have resulted in the loss of lives, destruction of property, and theft of livestock, particularly cows, goats, and rams.

“At least 150 cows have so far been taken, and the bandits usually come on motorcycles, sometimes up to 50 of them, to kidnap people, kill residents, or steal animals,” he said.

Bagobiri added that since 2022, the community had lost over 1,600 cows, dozens of motorcycles, and other valuable properties.

He appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State to come to their aid by deploying more security operatives to the area.

“We are calling on the federal and state governments, particularly Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, to assist us and work closely with the security agencies, especially the army and police to protect our people,” he said.

He added that some communities around Faruruwa had been deserted as residents had fled to neighbouring Katsina State for safety.

Bagobiri, who was flanked by community elders during the briefing, stressed that unless urgent measures were taken, the entire border communities would be overrun by bandits. (Daily Trust)
