Trump announces end to US aid for Colombia, calls president ‘a lunatic’

US President Donald Trump said Sunday that his administration would end all financial aid to Colombia and impose tariffs on the South American country, accusing its government of failing to combat drug production and calling its president, Gustavo Petro, “a lunatic.”

Speaking to reporters upon returning to Washington, Trump confirmed that a statement from Senator Lindsey Graham about forthcoming tariffs on Colombia was “correct” and said the rate would be announced Monday.

“I’m stopping all payments to Colombia because they don’t have anything to do with their fight against drugs,” Trump said.

“They make drugs, they refine drugs, they make cocaine. They have no fight against drugs. Colombia is out of control, and now they have the worst president they’ve ever had. He’s a lunatic who’s got a lot of problems, mental problems.”

He added that Colombia “destroys families” by exporting cocaine worldwide and claimed the country “has no intention” of curbing drug production. (Anadolu Agency)
