NSCDC Mining Marshals occupy an illegal mined minerals storage facility
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has dismantled an illegal mineral storage operation in the Onne area of Rivers State.
The enforcement action was carried out by the NSCDC Mining Marshals, South-South Zone, in collaboration with the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development.
According to a statement signed and released by the corps spokesperson Afolabi Babawale on Saturday, the operation was based on “credible intelligence” and led to the discovery of multiple warehouses used to store mined minerals.
“In a bold step to protect the nation’s resources and ensure the safety of local communities, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps Mining Marshals, South-South Zone, have dismantled an illegal mineral storage network uncovered within the Onne axis of Rivers State,” the statement read in part.
Authorities reported that the operators lacked the necessary permits, licences, and documentation of royalty payments to the Federal Government, the statement explained.
It also added that DSC Emmanuel Abiahu, who led the enforcement team, said the action was in line with the directive of the NSCDC Commandant General, Prof. Ahmed Audi.
The crackdown is part of broader efforts to protect the country’s solid mineral resources and support lawful mining operations.
“Abiahu warned that all operators within the region must comply with the law or face decisive enforcement action, adding that the corps remains committed to safeguarding lives, livelihoods, and the environment through sustained surveillance and collaboration with stakeholders,” the statement noted.
The NSCDC also reiterated its commitment to working with stakeholders to ensure that Nigeria’s natural resources benefit the wider population.
The corps encouraged members of the public to provide timely and credible information that could assist in tackling illegal mining across the country. (The PUNCH)
