The University of Lagos Alumni Association is set to celebrate its 55th anniversary with a grand award dinner to be attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima as the Special Guest of Honour.
The award dinner, scheduled for today, October 17, 2025, at the Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, will be chaired by the Ogbeni Oja and Regent of Ijebuland, Dr Sonny Kuku, while Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, will be the host.
The alumni association, at the event, will confer Alumni Lifetime Achievement Awards on Chief Justice of the Federation, Justice Kudirat Kekekre-Ekun; Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, University of Lagos, Wole Olanipekun; Chairman, Channels Media Group, Dr John Momoh, and Dr Sonny Kuku, among others.
President, University of Lagos Alumni Association Worldwide, Ifeoluwa Oyedele, who spoke about the event, said the award ceremony is to showcase the products of the university and to celebrate those who have also made an impact in various fields and have assisted the institution.
Oyedele said the goal of the association is to be the principal financier of the university, adding that the association aims to position itself in a situation where it can intervene in the funding of the university and solve the institution’s most critical problems.
According to him, the association is set to launch an app to make it possible for all alumni of UNILAG from any part of the world to download it, register, and participate in the association’s activities, and also have enough information about the university itself.
He, however, said that from the next convocation, the association would introduce prizes for character, academic staff, non-academic staff, and for the graduating student.
He also revealed that in a few weeks, the association would lay the foundation for a 1,800-bed student hostel within the university.
Oyedele, while speaking on the strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), appealed to the union to end the strike and devise a new way of resolving differences with the Federal Government.
He urged the union to return to the negotiation table for the betterment of the students and the country as a whole. (THE GUARDIAN)
