Ahead ofSaturday’sgovernorship election in Edo State, the Director General, National Youth Service Corp (NYSC), Brigadier-General Sule Kazuare, has warned corps members serving in the state and those that would participate in the exercise to shun all acts capable of derailing the electoral process just as he solicited for security of corps members engaged in the conduct of the exercise.
He spoke on Monday shortly after visits to various security agencies in the state including the Nigerian Army, Department of State Security (DSS), Police and others where he also implored the corps members to play by the rules of the game during and after the election.
He said the safety of the corps members was paramount for a credible election and solicited for the support of all critical stakeholders in the state ahead of the state governorship election scheduled forSeptember 10.
Resident Electoral Commission (REC),Edo state, Sam Olumekun, appealed to the corps members who will be engaged as Adhoc staff to be non-partisan and eschew acts of electoral malpractices for a free, credible and fair election in the state.
Earlier, the Edo state Police Commissioner, Chris Ezike and the brigade commander, 4th Brigade of the Nigeria Army, Brigadier General, Bambella Raji pledged their continued support to ensure the safety and security of all corp members during and after the forthcoming governorship election in the state.
In her remark, the NYSC Edo state coordinator, Akyam Atine, expressed confidence that the corp members are duty ready to contribute their quota to ensure a credible election in the Edo governorship election onSeptember 10.
In a related development, INEC yesterday said they are ready with material and other necessary logistics to ensure a smooth, free, fair and credible election in the state.
This is as a new commissioner of police, Fimihan Adeoye, also resumed duty in readiness forSaturday’selectoral process with an assurance that the rank and file of the command would deploy the needed professional conduct and struggles towards making the polls a hitch free process.
Fimihan replaces the out-gone Commissioner of Police Chris Ezike who handed over the baton to him during a short ceremony held at the Force headquarters, in Benin City.
In addition, key logistic materials including vehicles and communication gadgets are expected to arrive from the force headquarters, Abuja, for full blown operational activities for officers and men of the command to be deployed ahead all important election in the state.
Special Adviser to INEC chairman, Professor Mohammad Kuna, gave assurance of the commission’s readiness during the stakeholders meeting and public presentation on security threat assessment for the Governorship election organised by CLEEN Foundation.
Kuna stated that the commission has been well equipped with human and capital resources to carry out the exercise.
According to him, “It has been observed that whatever the modalities INEC has put no ground to conduct a credible poll, the people must ensure that they behave in a civil manner to help democracy grow in the country.” (ngrguardiannews.com)
