Lagos denies involvement in FESTAC demolitions

The Lagos State Government has denied any involvement in the recent demolition of structures in FESTAC Town, clarifying that the exercise was not authorised by the state.

This was disclosed in a statement titled “Lagos Government Denies Involvement in FESTAC Demolition,”issued by Mukaila Sanusi, Director of Public Affairs at the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, on Tuesday.

Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Oluyinka Olumide, clarified the ongoing the demolition on Tuesday.

He explained that, “contrary to speculation, the State Government had no role in the demolitions carried out in the area.”

Olumide reiterated that Lagos follows a transparent and regulated procedure for all demolition activities.

He explained that such exercises must involve the issuance of statutory notices and engagement with affected stakeholders, stressing that any demolition carried out without official clearance does not reflect the position or practice of the current administration.

“We want to assure residents that the Lagos State Government remains committed to fairness, due process, and the protection of property rights.

“Any demolitions carried out without proper authorisation do not reflect the position or practice of this administration,” Olumide said.

He also urged all agencies, including federal bodies operating within Lagos, to consult and obtain clearance from the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development before undertaking any demolition activity.

The clarification followed a series of demolitions in FESTAC this October.

Over the weekend, more than 15 buildings were demolished at 6th Avenue, leaving traders and shop owners in shock as bulldozers moved from one structure to another. (PUNCH)
