Arthritis isn’t just for the old, doctor tells youths

Dr Chinonso Egemba, popularly known as Aproko Doctor

As the world marks World Arthritis Day, Dr. Chinonso Egemba, popularly known as Aproko Doctor, has raised awareness about the often-overlooked impact of arthritis on young Nigerians.

In a series of posts via X on Sunday, Egemba emphasized that arthritis is not merely a sign of old age but a condition threatening the dreams of young footballers, dancers, and entrepreneurs across the country.

The medical professional referenced the 2025 World Arthritis Day global theme to urge people with rheumatic diseases to pursue their personal aspirations despite their condition.

He said, “We think arthritis is just ordinary body pain for our parents. A sign of old age. But I’ve seen the dreams of young Nigerians (footballers, dancers, entrepreneurs) put on hold by this disease.

“Arthritis doesn’t care about your age; it cares about your joints. Today is #WorldArthritisDay, and the theme is Achieve Your Art. Protecting YOUR dream starts with protecting your joints now. Don’t let arthritis steal your future. Get diagnosed early.”

According to medical research, arthritis is a chronic joint inflammation that often results in pain, swelling, stiffness, and difficulty in moving joints.

It can occur due to injury, metabolic conditions, genetics, infection, or immune system dysfunction.

While several different types of arthritis exist, there are different management strategies for each.

Speaking on how to treat arthritis, Dr. Egemba explained, “There’s no magic cure for most types of arthritis, but you are not helpless. You can use these 4 steps to take control:

“Movement is Medicine: I know it sounds crazy to exercise when you’re in pain, but the right movement is your friend. Stronger muscles act as a natural brace for your joints. Start with low-impact activities like brisk walking. This is kind to your joints.

“Your Kitchen is a Pharmacy: Focus on anti-inflammatory Nigerian food like Titus, greens like Ugu, and spices like ginger and turmeric. Reduce processed snacks and sugary drinks.

“Reduce excess weight. This reduces the pressure on your knees. Then very importantly…

“Manage Your Mind: Arthritis can be exhausting and can make you start thinking too much. This is not a sign of weakness. Talk to someone you trust. Build a support system, too.”

He added that managing arthritis is a daily job, but it’s a job that can help achieve one’s dream. (The PUNCH)
