CP Rashid Afegbua, Cross River State Commissioner of Police
The Cross River State Police Command has intercepted a stolen Toyota Camry and prevented suspected armed robbers from moving the vehicle out of Calabar.
The incident occurred on Sunday night, October 5, 2025, when a grey Toyota Camry with registration number YAD 549 ER, belonging to Mr. Ikyum Mark of Etta Agbor layout, was snatched at gunpoint near Hall 2 by the University of Calabar.
Police sources said the victim promptly reported the case to the Anti-Cultism Base, which issued a radio alert to the control room and all night patrol units. The alert proved effective when operatives of Operation Sting, stationed at the Pamol checkpoint along the Calabar–Odukpani Highway, spotted the stolen vehicle approaching their post.
The suspects reportedly attempted to flee when flagged down for a stop-and-search, prompting a police chase. They eventually abandoned the vehicle and escaped into a nearby bush under the cover of darkness.
Police later recovered the car, which is now secured at the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) as investigations continue.
Confirming the incident, Commissioner of Police Rashid Afegbua commended the operatives for their swift response and emphasized the importance of timely crime reporting by residents.
Afegbua noted that quick information from the public often determines how fast the police can respond and disrupt criminal activity. He assured residents of the command’s readiness to maintain law and order and urged continued collaboration with security agencies.
In a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ugbo Irene, reiterated the command’s commitment to tackling crime and called on members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to security operatives. (The Guardian)
