Anxiety has continued to mount in the ancient city of Kano over the dispute between the state governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf and the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force in the state.
The relationship gap, which came to the public glare at the Independence Parade ground, Sani Abacha Stadium, on Wednesday, climaxed on Thursday with a few cases of sponsored demonstrations in the state capital.
Speaking at the end of 65th Independence parade activities, Governor Yusuf had urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to immediately withdraw the state Police Commissioner, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori from the state for alleged professional misconduct.
Yusuf specifically accused the police commissioner of abruptly withdrawing the police detachment earlier deployed to the parade ground for the Independence Day celebration.
“On behalf of myself and the entire Kano people, I call on President Tinubu to hasten the removal of the police commissioner for his misconduct, trying to create problems for the state, and his persistent anti-Kano activities, he stated.
He further remarked that: “Kano people are highly respectable people who want to see the progress of Nigeria and to live in unity. We don’t want people like the police commissioner around us, who is hiding something against the state.
“You can imagine, the police commissioner even withdrew the police open parade car. I had to use my personal protocol car to go round the parade ground. This is unacceptable.”
Yusuf insisted that Nigeria deserved security personnel who are honest, fair and committed to protecting lives and property without bias or political influence.
He promised to write a petition to the National Security Adviser and to the president to seek the replacement of the state commissioner of police at the nearest time. (Saturday Sun, but headline rejigged)
