Nigeria has witnessed a surge in violence, crimes and numerous unsolved murders which have left families and communities in shock, sadness and worry.

The recent death of the 29th year-old TV anchor and lawyer Somotochukwu Maduagwu brought attention to the alarming rate of homicide.

With the nation mourning the demise of one of its citizens, here are unsolved murders in the country’s checkered history:

1. Miriam Nnenna Elom

She was a 27-year-old nurse who was abducted in a “one-chance” robbery in Abuja, Nigeria, in June.

Her body was discovered after a week, where it was dumped along Gwarimpa Road.

Some reports suggested that she could have been a victim of organ harvesting, but so fa,r no suspects have been identified nor arrested, despite family pleas for justice.

2. Grace Godwin

The dead body of the 23-year-old was found in the Jabi district of Abuja. The police force said it suspected that she was a victim of a “one-chance” robbery incident.

Due to the injuries seen on her mutilated body, she was beaten, robbed, and strangled during the attack. This also happened early this year, with investigations still ongoing and no progress so far.

3. Adedamola Quadri Ogunbode

The 28-year-old Lagos State University graduate was said to have been reportedly kidnapped in Ojo, Lagos, on the 16th of January 2025. His body was later found.

So far, no convictions have followed, leaving the case unresolved to date.

4. Christopher Ogbodo

Identified as a retired soldier who was 63 years of age, Christopher Ogbodo was killed while working as a night security guard on Enugu road.

The attack occurred during a robbery, and his wife demanded and pleaded for justice. So far, no news update on arrests or suspects in his case has been shared.

5. Father Mathew Eya

On the 19th of September 2025, the said victim, a 52-year-old Catholic priest in Eha Ndiagu, was among the victims of Nigeria’s escalating insecurity crisis.

Two assailants on a motorcycle tailed his vehicle along a lonely stretch of road in Enugu and fired shots into his tyres, forcing the car to come to a halt.

The assailants approached the car and pumped multiple bullets into the priest at close range. They vanished into the bushes.

The case remains unsolved as of the time of this report. (Daily Sun)
