TUC slams Dangote Refinery, threatens nationwide strike over ‘anti-worker actions’

Festus Osifo, TUC National President

The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has condemned what it described as “anti-worker actions” by the management of Dangote Petroleum Refinery, warning that the development could trigger a nationwide industrial action if not urgently reversed.

In a strongly-worded statement signed by its President, Comrade (Dr.) Festus Osifo, the TUC faulted the refinery’s decision to terminate workers allegedly for exercising their constitutional right to freedom of association and unionization.

The Congress said it stood in “full solidarity” with the affected workers and the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), one of its affiliates whose members were allegedly victimized for declaring union membership.

“Such actions amount to a direct assault on Section 40 of the Nigerian Constitution and on Nigeria’s obligations under International Labour Organization (ILO) conventions,” the statement read.

The TUC issued three key demands to the Dangote management:

Immediate and unconditional reinstatement of all affected workers.

A public apology with firm assurances against future victimization.

An independent investigation into the refinery’s labour practices, involving the Ministry of Labour, the ILO and other stakeholders.

As part of its response, the Congress said it had placed all affiliates on red alert and standby for further directives, including the possibility of a national strike. “No corporation, regardless of size or wealth, will be allowed to trample on the dignity and rights of Nigerian workers,” the statement stressed, adding that the TUC remained united and ready to act “decisively” in defense of its members and the Nigerian workforce.
