Audu Ogbeh laid to rest in Benue as Tinubu eulogises ex-minister

The late Audu Ogbeh

President Bola Tinubu on Friday, urged the family of the late Audu Ogbeh to emulate the outstanding qualities that distinguished the late politician as an exceptional statesman who served Nigeria diligently.

The president was represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, during the burial ceremony of the former minister in Otukpa, in Ogbadibo Local Government Area of Benue State.

The remains of the former Minister of Agriculture were laid to rest in his country home, Efugo, Otukpa, Ogbadibo LGA. The casket bearing the elder statesman was lowered into the grave at about 1:18 p.m.

Reading the president’s testimonial titled “Contributions of Chief Audu Ogbeh to the Political Development of Nigeria,” Akume listed Ogbeh’s qualities to include humility, compassion, a unifying personality, leadership with integrity, and service to the nation.

Tinubu stated that although Ogbeh’s death had left a void in Nigeria’s political space, the legacies he left behind would never be forgotten.

He said, “We equally remember him for his humility, compassion and generosity. He was a unifying personality who bridged divides and brought people together. His impact on Nigerian politics and society will be felt for generations to come.

“As we reflect on his life and legacies, we are reminded of the importance of leadership, integrity, and service. May we strive to emulate his example and continue his work towards building a better Nigeria.”

Tinubu added that he believed Ogbeh’s legacies would inspire future generations to attain greater heights.

He noted, “Chief Audu Ogbeh played significant roles in Nigerian politics, particularly in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Ogbeh was a founding member of the PDP and contributed significantly to Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999. He served as the PDP’s National Chairman from 2001 to 2005, working to balance party dynamics and navigate complex national issues with reason and principle.

“Chief Ogbeh also played a critical role in the formation of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and its merger with the All Progressives Congress (APC). He joined the APC in 2015.

“His legacy extends beyond party affiliations, with tributes highlighting his integrity, intellectualism, and dedication to public service. He was a peace-loving leader who worked tirelessly to promote unity and stability. His dedication to Nigeria’s progress and development was unwavering.”

Among the dignitaries at the burial were the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev; Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Shippers Council, Barr. Pius Akutah, Executive Director of Housing Finance and Accounts, FHA, Dr. Mathias Byuan, Senator Titus Zam (representing Benue North-West); the Deputy Governor of Benue State, Sam Ode; former governor of Anambra State, Chris Ngige; and former deputy governor of Benue State, Chief Steven Lawani, among others.
