Mohamed Salah closing in on niche Premier League record for Liverpool which would oust Wayne Rooney

In the eyes of some pundits, Mohamed Salah has had a slow start to the 2025/26 season with Liverpool.

Salah was the outstanding player of the previous campaign, hauling the Reds to a second Premier League title.

The Egyptian hit 29 goals and registered 18 assists as Liverpool romped to the crown, but his tally of two goals and two assists after five games this time has underwhelmed some.

Nevertheless, Salah is just one goal contribution behind 2024/25 at the same stage, and is on course to deliver another excellent campaign.

He set up Ryan Gravenberch in Saturday’s Merseyside Derby, making it 274 goal contributions in 293 Premier League appearances for Liverpool.

And although Salah would have liked a goal of his own to go alongside his assist, the lofted ball in for Gravenberch to finish beautifully put the 33-year-old within touching distance of a Wayne Rooney record.

Mohamed Salah nearing most goal contributions for a single club

Whichever way you square it, Salah has earned the right to be labelled as one of the greatest players of the Premier League era.

The Egypt captain is fourth on the all-time top scorers list and is also in the top ten when it comes to creating goals.

Combine these two things together, and you get the full picture of just how impressive Salah has been for Liverpool.

As per data analysts Squawka, the No. 11’s record of 274 goal contributions while playing for the Reds is the second most registered by one player at a single club in Premier League history.

Rooney is the current holder of this slightly niche crown, having hit 276 for Manchester United.

With Salah needing just two more to surpass the United icon, only a catastrophic injury could prevent it from happening.

In fact, with virtually two full seasons left on his contract at Anfield, Salah will likely be well clear of Rooney by the time he leaves Liverpool.

Is Salah the greatest Premier League player of all-time?

As statistics like this illustrate, Salah is one of the best players ever seen in the current iteration of the English top flight.

Rooney is usually regarded as someone at the very top of the pile, and it is hard to argue with his goal-scoring record along with his haul of five title wins.

Another player often claimed to have been the best ever is Arsenal legend Thierry Henry, who features in fifth on this particular list.

But with records continuing to tumble, there is not much more Salah can do to surpass Henry. He has more goals than the Frenchman, more assists and has equalled his number of titles, his Golden Boot wins and is now the only player to win more than two PFA Player of the Year Awards.

Arsenal, United and Chelsea fans may not like it, but the facts are that Salah has an extremely good case to be the Premier League’s greatest ever. (ROUSING)
