Family in Edo raises the alarm over threats by cult group

The Obibhunu family of Egbele Uromi in the Esan North/East local government area of Edo State has raised the alarmed that members of the dreaded cult group, Ogboni Asigidi, still terrorising them with a view to getting their son, Benedict Obibhunu, threatening to be eliminated for being recalcitrant to take the position of his dad in the occult group.

In a petition written to the Inspector General of Police, dated September 15, 2025, signed by Mr. Odion Obibhunu, and made available to newsmen, it was stated that the Obibhunu family’s ordeal began in August 2024 when an attempt was made by the Ogboni Asigidi group to lure Benedict Obibhunu into joining the Confraternity, which he refused.

“This refusal sparked the group’s first attack when his wife, a mother of two, was machete-injured and left bedridden. The husband (Benedict) who is the family’s eldest son also fled the country for the safety of his life.”

Mr. Odion Obibhunu claimed that the occult group Ogboni Asigidi has been putting pressure on the family to have Benedict succeed his late father, who was a well-known cult member during his lifetime, allowing the first son to succeed him. However, the family has been the target of continuous violence as a result of their reluctance to comply with this demand.

“The reason we are writing this petition is that the cultists didn’t cease to hunt for my brother, because three months ago, the same cult members armed with guns and battle axes, invaded our family house on 51, Old Irua Road Uromi, Edo State, where they harassed the occupants and later drove them away from the house. They warned that they would kill everyone in the house the next time they come. “The house has remained deserted till today,” Mr. Odion Obibhunu said.

“Just on Monday, September 15, 2025, some members of the same cult group came to my house at No. 20 General Hospital Road Uromi Edo state, and demanded to see Benedict. I told them he was not with me. They threatened to kill me if I didn’t provide them with information on his whereabouts. I pleaded with them not to kill me and said that I would go search for him. They then left with a warning to come back for Benedict Obibhunu. We are terrified and don’t know how to stop this continuous stream of threats,” the petition read. (Daily Independent)
