Port Harcourt, Akwa Ibom experience blackouts after outage on Aba/Itu transmission line

High tension power line

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced a forced power outage on the Aba/Itu 132 kilovolt (kV) transmission line.

In a statement issued on Sunday, TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah said the outage occurred at about 1:03 a.m. on Saturday, 13 September, following a line trip. The disruption cut bulk power supply to the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED) and to Akwa Ibom State.

PHED’s coverage area also includes Bayelsa, Cross River and Rivers states.

“The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) wishes to inform the public of a forced outage on the Aba/Itu 132kV Transmission Line that occurred on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at approximately 01:03 a.m. due to a line trip,” the statement read.

“This incident interrupted bulk power supply to the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHED) and also power supply to Akwa Ibom State. Our maintenance crew has promptly responded to the situation and is working diligently to rectify the fault and restore power supply to the affected areas.”

The company apologised for the inconvenience caused and assured consumers that electricity would be restored once repairs were completed.

The latest disruption comes barely a week after a thunderstorm damaged the 132kV Otukpo–Nsukka–New Haven transmission line on 8 September. That incident sparked a fire, destroyed a house built under the transmission line, burned a car parked within the right-of-way and killed two cows along the path. (BusinessDay)
