The Akwa Ibom State Police Command arrested three prime suspects believed to be behind a nationwide fraud syndicate that has defrauded prominent Nigerians, including politicians, security officers, and business leaders.

Police Public Relations Officer DSP Timfon John confirmed the developments in Uyo on Monday. He stated that the operation was undertaken by the command operatives following the directive of the Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare.

The suspects, identified as Prince Francis Albert (27), alleged leader of the gang; Augustine Ernest Bassey (39), a POS operator; and Mbetobong Godwin (35), were picked up from their hideout in Ibesikpo Asutan on September 5, 2025, after months of technical and intelligence-led surveillance.

Albert, a graduate of Sokoto State Polytechnic, reportedly confessed to luring victims using multiple phone numbers and fake identities, sourcing contacts from wedding invitations, obituary posters, and complimentary cards. He admitted to relocating to Akwa Ibom in April to evade security operatives.

The two accomplices, Bassey and Godwin, allegedly aided the scheme by receiving fraudulent proceeds through their OPay accounts. Police say the suspects are cooperating in ongoing efforts to recover stolen funds and track down other fleeing syndicate members.

Meanwhile, in a separate development, the Command has launched a manhunt for attackers who ambushed a herder in Etoi village, Uyo, on September 11, 2025. The assailants allegedly held the victim hostage, slaughtered one of his cows, and attempted to flee with the meat before operatives intervened.

On sighting the police, the suspects escaped, abandoning six sacks of meat, which were later identified by the Cattle Dealers Association as belonging to a herder from Jada LGA, Adamawa State. The recovered meat has since been returned to the rightful owner, while discreet investigation is underway.

Also on September 11, a violent altercation in Ibesikpo Asutan LGA claimed the life of a community youth leader, Ekopimo Effiong Moses, 34, after a machete duel with one Joseph Okon Eren, 37. The suspect has been arrested, and the alleged murder weapon recovered.

The Police Command, however, assures residents of the state that it remains fully committed to safeguarding lives and property, urging members of the public to report suspicious activities and assist ongoing investigations. (Nigerian Tribune)
