Late Ex-military governor Gen Omu




The burial of former Military Governor of the South-Eastern State and respected statesman, Major General Paul Ufuoma Omu (Rtd), has been slated for Saturday, November 29, 2025, in his hometown of Igbide, Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State.

General Omu died on April 29 at the age of 84.

He served as a member of the Armed Forces Ruling Council and once commanded the prestigious Command and Staff College, Jaji.

A series of commemorative events is planned ahead of his interment. Proceedings will begin with a Service of Songs at All Saints Church, Wuse Zone 5, Abuja, on Thursday, November 20, followed by a commemoration service at St. Philips Anglican Church, Asaba, on Tuesday, November 25.

A public lecture and tribute session will be held at Isoko House, Oleh, on Thursday, November 27. The following day, a lying-in-state and second service of songs will take place in Isoko South.

The final rites will commence Saturday morning, November 29, with a lying-in-state at Ufuoma House, Igbide, followed by a funeral service at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church. A Thanksgiving service will be held at the same church on Sunday, November 30.

Meanwhile, a burial committee chaired by former Delta SSG Comrade Ovuozourie Macaulay, with Ven. Hon. Augustine Aziakpono Ovie, as Secretary, has been constituted.

Gen. Omu served as Military Governor of the South-Eastern State from 1975 to 1978, overseeing key infrastructure and policy reforms. He later chaired the Governing Board of the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS) in 2009.

A community champion and former President of the Isoko Development Union (2014–2015), he is remembered for his commitment to unity, education, and local empowerment. Known by traditional titles such as the Olodi of Igbide Kingdom and Othuke of Isoko Land, Omu’s legacy spans military professionalism, public service, and grassroots development. (The Nation)
