The Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Ahmad, on Saturday disclosed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had approved N158 billion for the advancement of education in Nigeria.

Ahmad made this known at the 42nd convocation and 50th anniversary of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, where she explained that the funds would be channelled into technical and vocational education training (TVET).

She said the initiative would empower at least 650,000 Nigerian youths with technical, vocational, and digital skills to meet emerging industrial and labour market needs.

The minister emphasised that the federal government’s investment was a demonstration of its commitment to youth development, noting that the provision of electricity to select universities through the Rural Electrification Agency, including Usmanu Danfodiyo University, was part of efforts to improve the learning environment and enhance productivity.

As part of the convocation ceremony, the university conferred honorary degrees on Sheikh Muhammad Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa and former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Faruk Yahaya (rtd.). Emeritus status was also bestowed on Prof. Dejo Abdulrahman, while several campus facilities were named after notable personalities.

Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State, who attended the ceremony, lauded the federal government’s investment in education and pledged his administration’s support. In a surprise announcement, he offered a Hajj seat to the best graduating student.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Garba Bashir described the institution as a centre of excellence in research and community service, acknowledging past administrators, staff, students, and stakeholders for shaping the university’s legacy.

The convocation and golden jubilee celebration drew dignitaries from across the country, including top government officials, academics, and business leaders. (AriseNews TV)
