PDP supporters protest in Jos against 2027 presidential zoning

Supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from across the North Central states on Wednesday staged a protest in Jos, Plateau State, rejecting the zoning of the party’s 2027 presidential ticket to the South.

The protesters, who turned out in large numbers, marched along Yakubu Gowon Way to the state party secretariat, causing traffic and chanting solidarity songs. They carried placards and banners, many of them wearing T-shirts and displaying posters bearing the image of former presidential candidate and PDP chieftain, Dr Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, whom they openly endorsed for 2027.

They also pledged support for Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s second-term bid, saying he had “performed well” in office.

Addressing the gathering, Hon. Ninfa Ezekiel, leader of the North Central Support Groups for Dr Gbenga Hashim for President, appealed to the party’s leadership to revisit the zoning decision.

“We humbly appeal to the PDP leadership to reconsider its decision of zoning the presidential ticket to the South. This move may create perceptions of unfairness and undermine the party’s commitment to inclusivity and meritocracy,” Ezekiel said.

He argued that Nigerians want leaders capable of addressing economic and security challenges and that the PDP must provide a level playing field for all aspirants regardless of region.

Ezekiel reiterated support for Governor Mutfwang in Plateau and for Olawepo-Hashim at the national level, describing both as leaders with the vision and character to deliver results. He commended the National Working Committee led by Umar Damagum and other stakeholders for their efforts in stabilising the party ahead of the Ibadan national convention. (Daily Trust)
