Katsina govt condemns attack on elders during security meeting

The Katsina State Government has condemned Tuesday’s attack on participants of a security meeting in Katsina, describing it as “barbaric” and a violation of citizens’ right to peaceful assembly.

The meeting was organised by the Katsina Security Community Initiative, a Non-Governmental Organisation. A group of youths, suspected to be thugs, disrupted the meeting shortly after it began.

In a statement, the state Commissioner for Information and Culture, Dr. Bala Salisu Zango, denied allegations that the government instigated the disruption.

“It is illogical to accuse the administration of Malam Dikko Umaru Radda of sponsoring hoodlums to destabilise the summit,” he said.

The commissioner recalled that during a similar summit in Abuja days earlier, the state government was fully represented by a high-powered delegation of officials.

“Katsina State believes in community engagement to address security challenges. Disrupting such initiatives runs contrary to the government’s values and objectives,” he added.

Dr. Zango stressed that the government remains committed to dialogue, partnership, and collaboration with stakeholders in tackling insecurity.

He noted that various initiatives and policies have already been implemented to improve security across the state.

The government also expressed empathy to the organisers over the incident, pledging continued support for constructive ideas and solutions.

“We reassure all residents of our dedication to their safety and well-being,” the statement read. It further urged media organisations to verify information before publication to avoid misinformation.

The government reiterated that peace and security are collective responsibilities, requiring cooperation with security agencies, community leaders, and stakeholders to achieve sustainable stability. (Daily Trust)
