THE Abuja version of Leboku, the popular new yam cultural extravaganza celebrated by the Yakurr people of Cross River State, will be held tomorrow (Saturday) in Abuja.

In a statement yesterday, the Kedei She Umor Otutu Development Association, the organisers of the event, said the 2025 Leboku Festival is intended to bring the rich cultural heritage of the Yakurr people from Cross River State to Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

They stated that the event, which is in its fourth edition, will be held at the Bolton White Marquee, 31 Kigoma Street, Wuse Zone 7, from 12p.m.

According to them, the festival will offer Abuja residents and visitors a taste of Yakurr language, art, music and cuisine, alongside formal ceremonies to honour deserving community leaders.

Among those to be honoured are the representative of Cross River Central in the Senate, Senator Eteng Jones Williams; the member representing Yakurr/Abi Federal Constituency, Alex Egbona; and the Cross River State Commissioner for Special Duties, Oden Ewa.

Also, Chief Arikpo Ettah will receive the Yatumanen Beh Yakurr award in recognition of his lifelong contributions to the unity and development of the Yakurr Nation.

President of the Kedei She Umor Otutu Development Association, Queency Patrick, disclosed that the festival will be used to unveil former governor of Cross River State, Senator Liyel Imoke, as the Grand Patron of Leboku in Abuja, in recognition of his efforts to develop the Yakurr nation during his time as governor.

He said Special guests of honour include the Minister for Arts, Culture, Tourism and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musa Musawa and Director General of the National Council for Arts and Culture, Mr. Obi Asika.

“We are delighted to bring a piece of Yakurr land to Abuja. Leboku is more than a festival – it’s a celebration of unity, heritage, and the enduring spirit of our people. We look forward to welcoming dignitaries, cultural enthusiasts, and the media to share in this unforgettable experience,” Patrick said. (The Guardian)
