Emeka Obasi floats daily newspaper

Four years after he sold his daily paper National Mirror to Barrister Jimoh Ibrahim in August 2008, seasoned publisher, Prince Emeka Obasi, is set to return with another daily but this time, one with a business and economy as niche.

Information reaching News Express has it that plans by Obasi to transform his weekly newspaper, Business Hallmark, into a daily have reached an advanced stage.

Reliable sources close to Prince Obasi disclosed that Business Hallmark will go daily early next January.

“Work is already at an advanced stage on the Preview Edition expected to be out on or around November 11 while the daily paper will hit the streets by the second week of January if all goes according to plan,” one of the sources told News Express this afternoon.

Obasi launched Business Hallmark shortly after selling National Mirror and has successfully grown it into a competitive weekly with an online daily edition. The paper started from Ikeja in Lagos before moving into its sprawling corporate head office along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

A one-time Information Commissioner in Abia State in Nigeria’s south-east, Obasi went into public relations after a stint as a journalist before settling for publishing in 1999 with Hallmark, a weekly political newspaper which rebranded as National Mirror before being sold to Barrister Ibrahim reportedly for a billion naira in what remains the biggest of such transaction in the Nigerian newspaper industry.
