Assault on NYSC member in Anambra ‘very wrong’ — Police

Vigilantes beat, strip female corps member in Anambra

The Anambra State Police Command has condemned the assault of a female National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, Jennifer Elobor, by local security operatives, describing the incident as unacceptable, but pledged to ensure justice.

This is according to the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Anambra Command, Tochukwu Ikenga, who spoke on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Tuesday.

“The video is very wrong, what they did to that lady is very, very wrong,” Ikenga stressed, assuring that the command remains committed to ensuring residents’ safety.

A video of security operatives under the umbrella of Operation Udo Ga-Achi, also known as the Agunechemba Vigilante Group, beating and later stripping the corps member naked in the Oba community, Idemili South Local Government Area, had gone viral.

The vigilantes had stormed the corps’ lodge in Oba, accusing Elobor and her colleagues of being fraudsters. Despite presenting her identification card, the security operatives beat her up, tore her c’othes, and stripped her naked.

Speaking about the incident, Ikenga said the victim contacted him directly, expressing dissatisfaction with how her complaint was handled at the Agunechemba security office.

“The point I want to draw here is that the process she went through in Agunechemba in getting justice, I think from her own point, she was not satisfied, that was why she stepped up the complaint to me,” he said.

According to him, the victim was invited to his office, but explained she was away for medical treatment, promising to come to his office.

“We, the Nigeria Police, Anambra State Command, are ready to make sure that we enforce [justice] whenever she comes around,” Ikenga added.

Meanwhile, the Anambra State Government says the operatives involved have been arrested.

“Immediately the incident happened, we arrested the operatives involved and placed them in detention,” the Special Adviser to Governor Chukwuma Soludo on Community Security, Ken Emeakayi, also said on the show. (Channels TV)
