Rivers State Police Command spokesperson, Grace Iringe Koko
There was pandemonium in Okereke Street in Mile 1 Diobu axis of Port Harcourt on Sunday night when a man simply identified as ‘Doctor’ allegedly stabbed his female lover to death over allegations of infidelity.
Report says the man had accused his female lover, identified as Ima, of cheating on him leading to an altercation between them.
A resident in the area who preferred anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the incident said the argument rose to a fever pitch as the man reached for a knife and stabbed the woman, who reportedly bled to death.
He added, “There was a crowd in the compound because of what happened. So the caretaker of the compound quickly rushed to the Azikiwe Police Division in Mile 2, Diobu to make a formal complaint about it and the man was arrested.”
Meanwhile, there was a mammoth crowd of sympathisers and onlookers who gathered outside the Azikiwe Police Division on Monday morning when the corpse of the lady was brought to the station.
Our reporter who visited the police station observed that the corpse of the lady was later taken to an undisclosed mortuary by the Police few minutes after it was brought to the station.
When contacted, the spokesperson of the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe Koko, confirmed the incident and the arrest of the suspect.
Iringe-Koko stated, “As we speak, the Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, has ordered the immediate transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department in Port Harcourt for discreet probe.”
Meanwhile, a rights activist and National Coordinator of the Centre for Basic Rights Protection and Accountability campaign, Prince Wiro, expresses sadness over the incident, warning people against going into a toxic relationship.
Wiro started, “This morning, while I was walking along Illabouchi Mile 2 Diobu PortHarcourt.I saw a mammoth crowd at the Azikiwe Police Division, and I enquired what had happened. I was meant to understand that the Police arrested a man for allegedly killing his female lover.
“We, as a civil society organisation, condemned such in its entirety because no individual has the right to take the life of another person, notwithstanding the situation. We, therefore, call on the Police to ensure a thorough and unbiased investigation into the incident and ensure that justice is served.
“I want to use this opportunity to advise young persons that a toxic relationship is not what you will endure. People should know when to walk away from a toxic relationship. There is no relationship that is more important than your life. You cannot be in a toxic relationship at the expense of your life.” (The PUNCH)
