Three people were confirmed dead and four others injured following a deadly Wednesday morning attack on Gwon village, in Rim community of Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, by suspected herdsmen militia.

According to a statement released by Berom Youths Moulder-Association, signed by its president, Dalyop Solomon Mwantiri, and Bature Iliya Adazaram, Secretary, and made available to Journalists on Thursday in Jos, the deceased were identified as Stephen Maigadi (57), Josiah Dachollom (32), and Davou Sunday. While injured victims Silvester Joshua (23), Samson Musa (25), Joshua Daniel, and Jonathan Yakubu are currently receiving treatment for various degrees of injuries.

“The Berom Youths Moulder-Association (BYM) under the leadership of Barr. Dalyop Solomon Mwantiri is again, noted with concern the recurring attack, banditry and other form of terrorism meted out on Gwon village of Rim Community, Riyom LGA at about 7:30am of today, 13th August, 2025 by 3 groups of armed Fulani footsoldiers from Bangai Fulani, resulting to the dead of 3 unsuspecting inhabitants, namely, Stephen Maigadi, 57 years, Josiah Dachollom, 32 years and avou Sunday. While 4 others, Silvester Joshua, 23 years, Samson Musa, 25 year, Joshua Daniel and Jonathan Yakubu sustained varying degrees of injury.

“Later that same day, around 6:46pm, the same terrorist group reportedly launched another armed invasion on Rinyan village, a neighbouring community in Tahoss, also in Riyom LGA. The attack was repelled following the intervention of security operatives from Sector 6 of Operation Safe Haven and the Nigerian Police Force”; the statement said.

The group stated that the attackers had attempted to breach the village for three consecutive days but only succeeded after residents had just finished their Christian morning devotion.

BYM noted that communication with residents of Rinyan village had been severed, making it difficult to ascertain the full impact of the second attack.

The BYM commended the swift response by Operation Safe Haven and the police, stating that such collaboration is crucial in restoring security and community confidence in crisis-prone areas of Plateau State.

The youth group, however, called on both the federal and state governments to declare Bangai Fulani and other violent-prone areas as “Terrorist Enclaves” to curb recurring violence.

They also urged local vigilante groups to continue cooperating with official security agencies for sustained protection of Berom land. (BusinessDay)
