The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has announced that 23 suspected internet fraudsters, arrested during a sting operation near the premises of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta, Ogun State, will be arraigned on Friday, August 15, 2025.
The suspects are to appear before D. Dipeolu, Justice of the Federal High Court sitting in Ikoyi, Lagos, on various charges bordering on impersonation, identity theft, and other forms of internet-related fraud.
According to EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, the arraignment follows the arrest of 93 individuals during a late-night raid at a hotel within the OOPL precinct.
EFCC investigations revealed that the suspects were attending a pool party organised to celebrate their alleged fraudulent activities.
The anti-graft agency said the gathering was originally planned to take place at two separate venues but was hastily relocated to the OOPL hotel in a bid to evade detection.
According to EFCC, intelligence reports suggested that the organisers believed hosting the party at the former president’s facility would shield them from law enforcement scrutiny.
It stressed that the OOPL itself was never the target of the EFCC operation, adding that the Commission’s focus was solely on the suspects.
“They were the target and have confessed to their involvement in internet crimes,” the statement reads.
The EFCC confirmed that the arraignment of the remaining suspects from the operation will take place in subsequent batches as investigations progress. (BUSINESS DAY)
