Smoke billowing from Ijebu Ode Military Base during the explosion
A powerful explosion occurred early Thursday morning at the Sappers Barracks in Ilese, Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, sparking concern among residents and prompting a swift response from military and local authorities.
The incident, which took place at a mini store within the barracks, is believed to have been caused by the detonation of bombs stored in the military armory, according to preliminary reports.
Eyewitness accounts suggest the explosion may have been triggered by a heat buildup in the storage facility, though official confirmation is still pending.
A statement posted on X by @sfojoemmanuela, representing local authorities or a related entity, noted: “We wish to inform the public that an explosion occurred on August 14, 2025, at the Ilese Army Barracks in Ijebu, Ogun State.
The incident took place at a mini store within the barracks and, according to eyewitness accounts, may have been caused by heat buildup.”
The blast caused significant alarm in the surrounding Ilese community, with residents reporting a loud bang that reverberated through the area.
Confirming the explosion and resultant fire outbreak, Spokesperson of the Nigerian Army, Lt.-Col. Appolonia Anele, in a statement on Thursday, said no life was lost during the unfortunate incident.
Anele stated that a localised explosion occurred within a storage building of the 42 Engineers Brigade Counter Improvised Explosive Device Squadron, causing a limited fire outbreak.
Swift intervention by troops of the 12 Field Engineer Regiment, in collaboration with the Ijebu-Ode Fire Service, ensured the fire was quickly contained.
“No lives were lost, and no injuries were recorded. Damage was limited to the affected building and some stored materials, according to Anele,” Anele said.
She said a detailed assessment was underway to determine the extent of material loss.
Anele urged residents of Ilese and nearby communities to remain calm and continue their normal activities.
“The Nigerian Army, working with relevant agencies, has begun a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the incident and prevent a recurrence.
“The Army remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of its personnel and members of neighbouring communities,” Anele added. (Pieced together from reports by PM News and NAN)
