The controversial and embattled Publisher/Editor-in-Chief of the Kaduna-based weekly, Desert Herald, Tukur Mamu, has been whisked away by plain-cloth policemen. He was arrested yesterday evening in Kaduna and taken to an unknown location in Abuja, the Nigerian capital.
“Six of the plain-cloth policemen came in an unmarked CRV around 5pm, went straight to our publisher’s office and took him to the State CID, from we understand he was taken to Abuja,” one of the workers told News Express.
According to him, “They seized all his GSM handsets and we believe it is connected to the publisher’s problem with the FCT Minister Bala Mohammad. Some of our security sources have confirmed that those who arrested him are police who were detailed from Abuja. However, we have not had any contact with him up till now and we do not know where he was taken to in Abuja.”
Desert Herald later circulated a bulk text message that said: “After effecting the arrest on the orders of the FCT Minister, thugs presumed to be sponsored by the minister have evaded DH office and carted yet-to-be-ascertained valuables.”
News Express reports that the Desert Herald Publisher has in the past few months had running battles with the FCT Minister over an alleged attempt to scandalise his nae and extort money from him.
