The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has dissolved the Amb. Sokubo Sara-Igbe Sukubo-led national executive committee and inaugurated a National Transition Committee (NTC) to steer the organisation for the next 60 days.
Comrade Gbenga Adedamola, National Commander of Man O’ War, was appointed chairman of the NTC, with a mandate to stabilise and reposition the council during the transition period.
In a statement, the NYCN said the decision was taken at an extraordinary management meeting — its highest decision-making body — held on August 7, 2025, in Abuja.
The meeting was attended by key stakeholders, including heads of voluntary youth organisations, former NYCN presidents, government representatives, 24 state chapters, and 61 member organisations.
According to the statement, a review of the council’s operations revealed “scandals of alleged criminal forgery, constitutional tampering, and questionable affiliations.”
It alleged that provisions in the 2018 NYCN Constitution (as amended) were doctored to enable tenure elongation, and that the purported de-affiliation and new affiliation of 180 organisations, alongside an increase in the age bracket from 18–35 to 18–45 years, sparked deep divisions within the youth constituency.
The management resolved to retain the 2012 NYCN Constitution as the operative document and to set up a constitution review committee to strengthen governance.
It also declared all affiliation, revalidation, and de-affiliation exercises conducted at the Port Harcourt congress or elsewhere null and void, and reaffirmed the recognition of 104 member organisations and all 36 state chapters, including the FCT.
The elective congress, initially scheduled for September 2025, has been moved to October 7, 2025, to allow for a smooth transition and a credible electoral process.
The meeting also passed a vote of confidence in the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, for his commitment to youth development, and applauded President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly the increased funding for the Nigerian Youth Investment Fund and the Student Loan Scheme.
