Aftermath of the heavy downpours in Ondo

Two teenage siblings have lost their lives in Ore, headquarters of the Odigbo Local Council Area of Ondo State, after drowning in a river in the community during a heavy downpour.

The Incident occurred on Tuesday night when the two boys attempted to cross the popular Omileye River in the area while en route home from their father’s shop.

According to a resident, who gave her name as Jumoke, the siblings had gone to their father’s shop, who is a motorcycle mechanic, after the summer class, but left his shop in the night after the heavy rain subsided.

The distressed father reportedly raised the alarm after returning home and being unable to find his children, prompting a search party to be organised to locate them.

Following several hours of searching, the lifeless bodies of the boys were discovered at different locations along the stretch of the river.

Jumoke said, “It was a terrible day. When they got home and he did not see them after a few minutes, he became worried. When the family and their neighbours began looking for them, others joined.

“After a few hours of searching, their bodies were found trapped between pieces of wood along the riverbank. The river was already overflowing when the children decided to cross it.”

When contacted, the police spokesperson in the state, Olayinka Alayande, who stated that the incident had not been reported at any police station in the area, assured that a detective would be assigned to commence an investigation into the matter.

He said, “The incident was not reported, but we will commence an investigation to unravel the exact cause. A detective will be assigned.” (The Guardian)
