Oshimili South council raises alarm over influx of criminals into Asaba

The Oshimili South Local Government, according to Chief Obi Kelvin Ezenyili, on Wednesday, raised concern over the influx of criminals from neighbouring States into Asaba, the administrative headquarters of his council, which is also the Capital of Delta State.

Addressing Journalists while reflecting on his administration’s one year in office in Asaba, Ezenyili said the persistent security infrastructure gaps, notwithstanding, have been an enormous challenge, but “our administration has taken concrete steps to strengthen security and protect our people”.

He said to nip in the bud the security issues, the council, among others, initiated the creation of a Security Trust Fund through a Public-Private Partnership, to provide sustainable financing for security-related projects, including equipment, procurement and logistical support.

The council boss also stated that his administration had inaugurated a 12-member combined security task force, comprising personnel from the Nigerian Army, Police, Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, and local vigilante groups.

“The task force aims to enhance information sharing, disrupt potential threats, and improve the overall security posture of the area.

“In response to prior theft incidents at the Council Secretariat, the administration installed Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras, which have significantly reduced crime.

“Plans are underway to expand CCTV coverage across major areas of the local government, pending certain legislative amendments”, he revealed.

On drug-related crimes, the chairman simply said: “The council has been actively collaborating with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) and local vigilantes to conduct periodic raids on drug dens.”

He said the counci’’s recent operation conducted in partnership with the Taskforce of the Palace of the Asagba of Asaba resulted in the arrest of several drug dealers and users, demonstrating the administration’s commitment to combating drug-related crime.

To enhance rapid response to security incidents, Chief Ezenyili announced the launch of a dedicated emergency short code number, 7745, which was unveiled on June 13, 2025.

According to him, the number was approved by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), and allows residents to alert security personnel quickly during emergencies.

However, within weeks of its launch, reports from residents in the Koka and Konwea areas led to the apprehension and prosecution of several criminals”, said Ezenyili, who reaffirmed that his administration remains committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents in the 11 wards of Oshimili South Council.
