Kwara CP, Adekimi Ojo
Commissioner of Police (CP) in Kwara State, Adekimi Ojo, has ordered the arrest and trial of some police personnel alleged to have extorted money from a student of the Federal Polytechnic, Offa.
Ojo dropped the hint to journalists in Ilorin over the telephone on Tuesday.
He said: “I was embarrassed by the conduct of the officers involved.”
The student, Taiwo Kayode Taye, was said to be travelling in a commercial vehicle to Oshogbo and was stopped by men of the Anti-Cultism Unit of the state Police Command at Erin-Ile, who searched and later allegedly demanded that he unlock his mobile phone.
The request, said to be declined, angered the law officers, who forcefully dragged him down to the nearby Ijagbo police division.
A social media handle said: “At Ijagbo police division, the student still refused to unlock his phone.”
This development further angered the policemen, who subsequently transferred the case to the state police command in Ilorin.
According to a police source (names withheld), it was at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) that he was allegedly forced to unlock his’phone and transfer N200,000 to an account bearing Lucy Akor.
Reacting to the development in a telephone chat with journalists in Ilorin on Tuesday, the Commissioner of Police (CP) Adekimi Ojo confirmed the incident and expressed displeasure and extreme disappointment over the conduct of the accused officers.
Adekimi said he has ordered the arrest of the officers involved, assuring that necessary action would be taken against them.
The Guardian reliably learnt that the arrest at Erinle had sparked outrage, especially at the institution, when the students learnt of the incident.
They immediately took to social media, demanding justice. (The Guardian)
