Kamala Harris shuts down California Governor speculation, says she’s stepping back from electoral politics for now

Former US VP Kamala Harris

Former Vice President Kamala Harris announced Wednesday that she will not run for governor of California in 2026, ending months of speculation over her political plans and leaving the door open to a potential third bid for the White House in 2028.

“I have given serious thought to asking the people of California for the privilege to serve as their governor,” Harris said in a statement. “But after deep reflection, I’ve decided that I will not run for Governor in this election.”

The decision marks a pivotal moment for Harris, who has spent the past six months weighing her next move after her 2024 presidential campaign ended in defeat to Donald Trump. Though she has not confirmed a future run, her statement made clear she intends to stay active in national politics.

“For now, my leadership and public service will not be in elected office,” she said. “I look forward to getting back out and listening to the American people, helping elect Democrats across the nation, I will remain in that fight.”

A longtime fixture In California politics, Harris previously served as San Francisco District Attorney, state Attorney General, and US Senator before being elected vice president in 2020. She became the first woman and the first Black and South Asian American to hold the office. But her historic career has also been shaped by political setbacks.

In 2020, Harris ended her first presidential campaign before the Iowa caucuses. After being selected as Joe Biden’s running mate and serving one term as vice president, she became the Democratic nominee in 2024 when Biden withdrew from the race months before the election. Trump went on to defeat her in a clean sweep of the swing states.

Her latest decision not to return to California politics leaves the Democratic race to replace outgoing Gov. Gavin Newsom wide open. Top contenders include former US Rep. Katie Porter, former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, former Biden administration official Xavier Becerra, and multiple statewide officeholders.

“She would’ve been a frontrunner if she entered,” said Democratic strategist Sean Clegg, a longtime Harris adviser. “But ultimately, this was a gut decision.”

According to Clegg, Harris has recently considered launching a nonprofit organization to mobilize young voters, signaling a possible pivot away from traditional political office.

“She’s more motivated, more excited by the opportunity to make change outside of the system,” he said. “She asked herself, ‘Do I want to go back into the system, or do something completely different?’”

Still, speculation about her political future is far from over. A 2028 presidential run remains on the table, though Harris would face the challenge of convincing Democrats to rally behind her after a high-profile loss to Trump and amid lingering frustrations with the Biden era.

“The Democratic Party is fractured and struggling to counter Trump’s influence,” said one senior party official. “Harris still has a lot to prove if she wants to be the future of the party.”

In a recent speech in San Francisco her first major public remarks since leaving office in January Harris condemned Trump’s leadership as a “wholesale abandonment” of American ideals.

Antonio Villaraigosa, who has entered the governor’s race, suggested Harris’ political career is far from over. “Her decision reflects her continued commitment to serving at the highest levels of government,” he said in a statement.

Whether through another presidential bid or a new political platform, Kamala Harris appears determined to remain a national figure just not from the governor’s mansion in Sacramento. (AriseNews TV)
