his pilot blew our minds by performing the almost impossible by landing an Airbus A380 nearly sideways during a storm.
Landing a plane is difficult at the best of times, but trying to land while tackling high winds and lashing rain, it’s impressive that the landing looked so controlled.
The pilot had to negotiate landing safely, and in the process, landed almost sideways, but it looks like, despite everything, it was managed safely.
This pilot successfully used a technique called ‘crabbing’, and the mind-blowing maneuver shows true mastery of the Airbus A380.
It must be quite stressful having to successfully land a passenger airplane at the best of times, let alone have to deal with a literal storm when you’re trying to get passengers and crew back down to earth safely.
In what was described by SDTV Live as the ‘craziest landing ever seen’, this video shows an Airbus A380 forced to land sideways due to severe crosswinds during a storm.
Occuring during February 2020 during a very severe storm in the UK called Storm Dennis, the show had to go on when it came to all forms of transport, including people travelling to and from abroad for all manner of reasons.
Life carrying on during a severe storm is the reason that this Airbus A380 pilot had to battle such dangerous weather at London Heathrow airport.
Described as ‘crabbing’, landing sideways and moving sideways during a cross wind like a crab is a recommended technique that not every pilot can master.
Aligning the nose of the plane into the wind neutralizes drift and helps the pilot stay in control of the plane while cross winds push it.
Keeping aligned with the runway centerline even though the plane itself is not aligned, helps with landing in even the most ferocious of storms.
This ‘crabulous’ pilot certainly proved why they are trusted to be flying in such dangerous crosswind conditions, and there’s no doubt that there’s nothing flier than a technique like this!
