Women and young people constitute the majority of the 168,187 new voters registered in Anambra State, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The figure, recorded during the recently concluded Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise ahead of the November 2025 governorship election, represents the highest number of registrants captured in a two-week period since the CVR was introduced in 2017.
INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, disclosed this in a statement issued Thursday in Abuja following the commission’s weekly meeting.
He said the total includes 97,832 women (58 per cent) and 70,355 men (42 per cent). In terms of age, 90,763 (53.97 per cent) of the registrants are young people aged 18 to 34.
On occupational distribution, 62,157 (36.92 per cent) of registrants identified as businesspeople, while 44,243 (26.31 per cent) are students.
Olumekun added that 303 persons with physical impairments (24.92 per cent) and 207 individuals with albinism (17.02 per cent) were also registered under the Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) category.
“These are preliminary figures pending data clean-up,” he said. “The detailed breakdown of the new registrants has been uploaded to INEC’s website and other platforms for public information.”
Olumekun explained that the CVR deadline was extended from July 17 to July 20 following appeals from citizens.
He said the next step in the voter registration process would be the display of the preliminary register for claims and objections by members of the public.
“The display will take place in all 326 wards in Anambra from Saturday, July 26 to Friday, August 1st,” he said.
He noted that after the display and completion of the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) verification, the new registrants would be added to the existing register, which will be published on a polling unit basis ahead of the election.
“Thereafter, the Commission will announce the dates and locations for the collection of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) for new registrants, as well as those who applied for transfer or replacement of lost or damaged cards,” he added. “PVCs from previous registrations will also be available for collection.”
“With 105 days to the election, the Commission is aware of the tight timelines, but we wish to reassure all new registrants in Anambra State that their PVCs will be available for collection ahead of the election.” (Daily Trust)
