RE: ‘BURIAL OVER’ — A review by Prof. Echefuna’ R G ONYEBEADI

Late ex-president Buhari

I have read, watched and listened to numerous comments on the demise of General Muhammadu Buhari. Some praises, some condemnations and some outrightly demonizing.

In all, there is no denying the fact that the late General Muhammadu Buhari, will surely be greatly missed by those he loved!...

A post captioned "Burial Over”, reproduced below for ease of reference, was forward to a platform I belong.

My comment on above mentioned article under review, item by item are as follows:

“This burial was the biggest, largest and the most attractive of them all since 1960!”

Comment: “Biggest, largest and the most attractive” in terms of what?

Yes, the crowd was much indeed, barring any possibility of AI interference, but the crowd seen that day seems to be composed mainly of curious downtrodden, who probably wanted to catch a glimpse to be sure the man really died!

How many foreign Presidents/Heads of Governments and the Diplomatic Corps were present there at his burial? – None!

Apart from his political party members, which other high ranking member of other political parties in Nigeria were there at his burial? – None!

How many former Presidents of Nigeria that are still alive were there at his burial? – None!

How many West African leaders, past and present, (including Niger Republic, where he spent humongous amount of borrowed money in the name of Nigeria, which generations of unborn Nigerians will continue to pay at great cost, to provide them railway and other infrastructure), talk less of other African and World leaders (past and present) were present there at the funeral of this former President of “the giant of Africa” – Nigeria? – None!

How many condolence message have been received from African and world leaders? – None!

How many condolence visits from the International Community so far? – None!

How many condolence visitations, sympathy and/or empathy messages from traditional institutions across Nigeria, particularly, Northern Nigeria? – None!

So, what really makes the burial of General Muhammadu Buhari “the biggest, largest and most attractive of them all since 1960”?

By contrast, notice for example, that at the recent funeral of the Pope, and also, at the inauguration of a new Pope, world leaders assembled there within hours and were scrambling for space and recognition there!

Need I say more?

“It was really a thrilling moment.”

Comment: This is like a double edged sword that could be swayed either way for those whom he liked/loved as well as those whom he didn’t like/loved.

To some, General Muhammadu Buhari was a hero; and to some, he was a foe!

Either way, there were excitements!

“In Abuja, people were with their phones watching online.”

Comment: What do you expect people on forced holiday to do even without electricity to watch television!?

“YouTube recorded huge followership today with a total of more than 56m viewers online watching the burial.”

Comment: Incredible! A link or source for verification wouldn’t be out of place!

“Airport routes to most destinations were closed traffic wise as all routes led to a small town known as Daura.”

Comment: This is a subtle confirmation that many scheduled legitimate movements of people and businesses were abruptly disrupted and scuttled by government forced holiday and regulation.

Just imagine the billions of money and productive hours lost by the forced government disruption!

“Critics watched and pretended not to, certainly, that increased the YouTube profit margins.”

Comment: Yes, “Critics” may have watched and indeed many of such did. But, it is highly uncharitable to state that they “pretended not to”, for what they intentionally or for lack of something else to watch, tuned into!

Yes, “YouTube profit margins” may have increased within that period, but there is no gainsaying the fact that, Nigeria and Nigerians lost big time!

“All television stations in Nigeria were forcefully hooked up even without being paid.”

Comment: This speaks for itself and justifies my preceding comment for lack of choice!

Just imagine how much the “television stations” that were “forcefully hooked up without being paid” may have lost and the effect of such on national economy!?

What a great disservice!?

“Yar Adua died in 2009(?) while as president, but certainly, it never attracted this type of followership and attractions.”

Comment: This sounds more like an insult to the sensibilities of Nigerians and unprovoked denigration of the noble and highly distinguished bereaved family of late President Umar Musa Yar’Adua!

What “type of followership and attraction”?

“Buharists worldwide hooked up and adored a man that led them into politics of discipline, sincerity, uprightness, self determination and selfless service.”

Comment: This looks more like hypocrisy and sycophancy at its peak with lack of sense of history!?

General Muhammadu Buhari lived on and was sponsored by government all his life, but he couldn’t and/or failed to pass on same as generational benefit to the populace, when he had the opportunities to do so as Head of State and later as President!

“The world stood still for Muhammadu Buhari!”

Comment: Which “world”? Where? How?

“At a point, critics disappeared and their bile was no longer feasible and necessary.”

Comment: This belie various comments across the globe and reviews in various media including many views on this platform!

“When dictators die, the victims don’t mourn”!

A quick Google will reveal the truth!

“What caught the fancy is the history of a man who refused to be enticed by the vices of this world, despite being in a position to do so.”

Comment: “What vices of the world” did the man “refused to be enticed” with, “despite being in a position to do so”?

Wasn’t it during his regime that lives of cows were made more valuable than that of human beings?

Wasn’t it during his regime that Nigeria’s borders were flung open to terrorist Fulani “herdsmen” that illegally entered the country where they were allowed to freely maim, rape, kill, kidnap Nigerians for ransom and dispossess Nigerians of their heritage in their ancestral homes and land till date? Wasn’t that contrary to his oath of office on the primary purpose of government, to preserve lives and properties of Nigerians?

Wasn’t it him that divisively called a whole notable component and people of this country “a dot in a circle”?

Wasn’t it him that institutionalized nepotism as an act of governance? Don’t even mention corruption!

Wasn’t it his military regime that carried out a failed illegal attempt to crate the late Alhaji Umaru Dikko from London to Nigeria?

Wasn’t it his military regime that promulgated decrees with retrospective/retroactive effect, which were used to kill Nigerians for crimes unknown to the law at that time?

Wasn’t it his military regime that scuttled the well thought-out metroline project in Lagos State to which Nigeria lost millions of dollars?

Wasn’t it his military regime that scuttled the ‘democratic’ government of Alhaji Shehu Shagari in 1984?

Wasn’t it his Presidency that illegally kidnapped/abducted and crated a Nigerian from Kenya to Nigeria under most inhuman conditions; against all known international laws and protocols; and then, abandoned him in the worst solitary confinement till he left office; against valid court judgements and pleas from notable elder statesmen across the country among others?

Wasn’t it him that sarcastically introduced 5%/95% reward policy against those who didn’t vote for him in an election, as if people don’t have a right to choose who they want; and as if our Commonwealth is his personal property to dispense as he wished?

Wasn’t it him that threatened that the blood of baboons will flow across Nigeria if he wasn’t declared winner of an election; which eventually translated to the blood of innocent citizens flowing across the country under his watch as President?

Wasn’t it him propagated stone age “Ruga” in the 21st century and politics of hate against a section of the country Nigeria, contrary to the spirit of one Nigeria?

The list is unending!

So, who exactly “caught the fancy”?

“A man who did more than any other president in terms of infrastructure in all sectors.”

Comment: This seems like revisionism at its peak and an obvious insult to past and present Presidents of Nigeria!

Perhaps, the author “George”, was mistaking Niger Republic for Nigeria!!

A man who refused to be provoked!

Comment: Yes, the man really “refused to be provoked” by terrorism, mediocrity, nepotism, segregation, indolence, sycophancy, despondency, hunger, sorrow, pain, avoidable deaths, “japa” syndrome, gargantuan corruption and unprecedented insecurity among others under his watch as President!

“The man laughed and went to sleep, leaving his millions of followers thronging to catch the last glimpse of him.”

Comment: Yes, the man not only “laughed and went to sleep, leaving his millions of followers”….he was actually seen on live television tooth-picking after sumptuous meal while millions of Nigerians across board were hungry, sick, dying, dispossessed and killed in their ancestral homes unprovoked and abandoned in IDP camps, even as Nigeria became the poverty capital of the world under his watch as President!

“Buhari attracted more than 56 million followers in a matter of 48 hours, a record breaking feat.”

Comment: Where? How? Proof?

“Good night Baba Buhari!”

Comment: While to err is human, it is divine to forgive.

In a widely circulated message, the late General Muhammadu Buhari’s wife, Aisha Buhari, purportedly wrote that her late husband had requested her to beg Nigerians to forgive him.

If the late General Muhammadu Buhari felt that he did no wrong to Nigerians, then, his will to beg Nigerians for forgiveness wouldn’t have been necessary!

May he be so forgiven by all those offended.

May his soul RIP.

“We will continue with your legacy!”

Comment: Who are the “We” that will continue with his “legacy”?

What legacy?

Legacy of:

Impunity, indifference, incompetence, laziness, segregation, nepotism, tribalism, sorrow, pain and death; corruption and insecurity?

Operation Python Dance?

Operation Crocodile Smile?

Zaria Shiite Massacre?

800 persons & youth Corps members murder (2011)?

EndSARS Massacre of 20/10/2020?

Agatu Massacre?

Southern Kaduna Massacre?

Nimbo Massacre?

Plateau Massacre?

Benue massacre?

Adamawa Massacre (2018)?

Taraba Massacre (2018)?

Boko Haram Rampage?

Zamfara Bandits?

Unknown gun men?

Fulani Herdsmen Terrorism?

…and so much more!?

Indeed, General Muhammadu Buhari came, he saw and most probably got conquered!

May the soul of General Muhammadu Buhari find peace with his Creator.

May God Almighty grant Nigerians the fortitude to bear the loss.
