The Lagos State Government has impounded 10 articulated vehicles and heavy-duty trucks for violating access restrictions on the Third Mainland Bridge.

The vehicles were seized by an enforcement team inaugurated to ensure compliance with the statutory regulations on restricted routes.

Mr Sola Giwa, Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday in Lagos.

The statement was signed by Mr Taofiq Adebayo, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).

According to Giwa, the operation reflects the government’s firm stance on public safety and adherence to traffic laws.

He said the trucks were impounded over the weekend, marking the start of the strict enforcement campaign.

“This demonstrates the administration’s commitment to regulatory order and the protection of lives and infrastructure,” he said.

Giwa noted that the action followed prior engagement with stakeholders, awareness campaigns, and official notices on the bridge restriction.

He described the Third Mainland Bridge as a vital link which had recently undergone significant rehabilitation.

“In spite of prior warnings, some drivers continue to disobey the law, endangering lives and the bridge’s integrity,” he stated.

He stressed that articulated vehicles above nine tonnes are legally barred from using the bridge.

“This restriction is backed by law, and violators will face strict penalties,” he said.

Giwa confirmed that LASTMA officers are now fully enforcing the regulation, with no exemptions for offenders.

He said the bridge, connecting Lagos mainland to the Island, now has advanced surveillance systems installed.

“These include high-definition speed cameras designed to track infractions and monitor compliance in real time,” he added.

He said the initiative Is part of the Sanwo-Olu administration’s wider strategy for road safety and responsible driving.

“The goal is to prevent bridge fatigue and ensure safe, efficient traffic movement,” he said.

Giwa said the enforcement was not punitive but necessary to protect public interest and preserve infrastructure.

He warned that the period of leniency had ended, and the rules would now be strictly enforced.

“Violators will have their trucks impounded and face lawful sanctions,” he said. (NAN)
