The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) will host the 3rd Lateef Jakande Memorial Lecture on July 23, 2025, at Edmark D’Podium International Event Centre in Ikeja, Lagos, starting at 10 a.m.
The event, dedicated to the legacy of the former Lagos State governor, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, will bring together governors, media executives, and dignitaries to discuss journalism’s role in nation-building.
Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed will deliver the keynote address titled “Journalism and the Challenges of Nation-Building in a Multi-Ethnic Society.” Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu will attend as the Special Guest of Honour, joined by Akwa Ibom State Governor Pastor Umo Eno. The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mallam Mohammed Idris, will serve as the Guest of Honour.
Prominent media figures, including Chief Femi Adesina, former Special Adviser on Media and Publicity; Joseph Adeyeye, Managing Director of Punch Newspapers; Stella Din-Jacobs, Director of News at Television Continental (TVC); and Funke Egbemode, former Osun State Commissioner of Information, will participate as discussants.
Proprietors, editors-in-chief, and editors from major Nigerian newspapers are also expected to attend, alongside business leaders like Prof Obiora Okonkwo, Founder of United Nigeria Airlines, and Dr. Allen Onyema, Chairman of Air Peace Airlines.
According to a statement by NGE President Eze Anaba and General Secretary Onuoha Ukeh, the lecture series celebrates Jakande’s enduring contributions to journalism, public service, and governance.
Launched in 2023 with a paper by Chief Felix Adenaike, the series continued in 2024 with Prince Nduka Obaigbena addressing media survival strategies. The Guild said the lecture will be “another insightful discussion on the challenges and opportunities in nation-building through journalism.” (Sunday Sun)
